STUDENT AWARDS: ORAL PRESENTATIONS
To promote outstanding students, this year, for the first time, ECCB will have a Student Awards for Oral Presentations. Students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts to enter the Student Awards programme. A panel of reviewers will select 8 finalists to present their oral papers at ECCB. The 8 finalists will give their oral presentation at a special session for Student Awards assessed by a panel of judges. Valuable prizes will awarded to all finalists. Guidelines for preparing abstracts and criteria for selection can be found here.
WORKSHOPS and COURSES (recommended for students)
“How to get there” – presenting different career paths to students
The goal of this round table is to provide students with a unique opportunity to get in contact with a joint panel of conservation biologists from different subject areas. This event will have several conservation professionals presenting their career (academia, NGOs, government, education, etc) and then give students the chance to ask questions about what they do, what led them there and to give advice on curriculum development and career options.
Communicating science to different audiences
In this dynamic, interactive and fun four-hour training course, we will highlight a range of strategies for communicating your scientific results to different audiences and help to make an impact on the general public as well as on the policy arena.
Current activities on science-policy interface: an overview of the IPBES process – workshop for students
The workshop will describe the process of IPBES formation: meetings, documents on organisational structure, stakeholders involved etc. There will be a special emphasis on the SCB’s role in a process, under which conditions (scientific independence, credibility and flexibility) the Society will accept the involvement in IPBES. The second part of the workshop will consist of a simulation of the IPBES ad-hoc committee decision-making process over IPBES organisational structure, followed by a discussion.
Introduction to LTER-EDU Project; The international Long Term Ecological Research network for students
LTER-EDU is an educational project that offers students a chance to be partners in a global ecological monitoring effort. The workshop is aimed at a wide audience, scientists, students and educators that will be trained to use the monitoring protocols and will be offered to join the collaborative monitoring effort in their countries.
Legal basis and implementation of EU Conservation directives
The purpose of this training session is to familiarize conservation biology students in particular with the legal framework for nature conservation in the EU. The legal perspective is often not offered in biology curricula, or even as a stand-alone course, but it provides the basis for an effective implementation of conservation knowledge and research. Thus, this class is an exceptional opportunity to learn first-hand the theory and practice of conservation directives. The contents of the class integrate a wide spectrum of conservation sciences, and provide a European-focus on conservation. This training session is also targeted at practitioners working in small /medium NGO’s.
Taking the pain out of writing scientific papers & how to write science proposals
Effective communication, by conservation biologists within and outside the discipline is rightly considered important by SCB. This course builds on the successful precedent at previous ECCB conferences. Course content covers the main areas of technical communication, written and oral, and because of the instructors’ professional background, uses practical examples that are relevant to conservation biology/ecology.

Many students don't get the opportunity to discuss some of the most fundamental issues in their careers with prominent professors and editors. These events give students the chance to address important questions to the experts. For example what makes a good paper, what editors think on your paper idea etc. Here, you can get advice from leading professors for your present and future research ideas.

Student networking event
Student make up almost half of the delegates that attend ECCB and we want them to have fun and get to know each other! Therefore we are organizing a networking event in a typical Scottish pub. Stay tuned for more info and social events!
